Symposium Innovative Technology for Psycho-Oncology: Tools, Methods and Resources
Co-chair: Gabriella Pravettoni, PhD
Symposium Abstract: New technologies bring extraordinary resources for psychological intervention and assessment. For instance, virtual reality is more and more common in the treatment of mood disorders, eating disorders and phobias, while mobile technologies are used by health professionals to help patients keeping track of their own health status and treatment adherence. However, there is a lack of knowledge and specialized skills in the specific field of psycho-oncology. The objective of this symposium is to present some notable technological resources that are useful for psychological practice in oncological contexts, both for what regards patients treatment and assessment and empowerment of the health professionals’ work and experience.
The APSCO application dedicated to supporting cancer patients by helping them self-evaluate their cancer distress levels was launched in 2016. The APSCO app is the first computerized instrument for automatic cancer distress screening for cancer patients and loved ones around them and for professionals. The app is available on the Android platform in Romanian and Hungarian and is tailored to screen for cancer distress. Among the information required for the app to work is a self-evaluation on a scale of 1 to 10 of the four emotion thermometers (ET) that indicate stress, anxiety, depression and anger levels. We will present the distress screening and management app and share first results from the more than 2500 users experience.
